A visually stunning Halloween punch that creates a bubbling, smoky cauldron effect using dry ice. This crowd-pleasing blend of citrus, cranberry, and a little fizz is both delicious and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (1.4 L) cranberry juice (100% juice, not cocktail)
  • 4 cups (950 ml) pineapple juice
  • 2 cups (475 ml) orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice (about 45 limes)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) ginger ale or lemon-lime soda
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar, or to taste (optional)
  • 12 cups (150300 g) frozen cranberries
  • 1 large orange, sliced into thin rounds
  • Fresh mint sprigs (optional)
  • Ice ring or large ice block
  • 12 pounds (450900 g) food-grade dry ice

Instructions

  1. Mix the Punch Base (Up to 24 Hours Ahead): In a large pitcher or container, combine the cranberry juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, and lime juice. Stir in the sugar until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. Prepare the Garnishes: Slice the orange into thin rounds. Keep frozen cranberries in the freezer until the last minute.
  3. Make an Ice Ring (Optional but Recommended): Fill a ring-shaped mold or small bowl with water. Add a few orange slices and a handful of frozen cranberries. Freeze overnight.
  4. Handle the Dry Ice Safely: Put on thick gloves. Using tongs, carefully transfer the dry ice block to a heatproof bowl. Do not touch with bare skin.
  5. Assemble the Punch Bowl: Just before serving, pour the chilled punch base into a large punch bowl. Add the ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. Stir gently. Add the ice ring or a large block of ice.
  6. Add the Dry Ice: Using tongs, carefully place one or two small chunks of dry ice (about the size of a golf ball) into the punch bowl. Do not drop from a height.
  7. Serve Immediately: Ladle the punch into cups, being careful not to scoop up any dry ice. The fog will last about 15-20 minutes. Add more dry ice as needed.

Notes

Never touch dry ice with bare hands; it can cause frostbite. Do not seal a container with dry ice inside. Keep the punch bowl uncovered. Store leftover dry ice in a well-ventilated area. Supervise children around the punch bowl. For an adult version, replace ginger ale with 2 cups of vodka or white rum.
