This Healthy Crockpot Turkey Chili with Sweet Potato is a hearty, flavorful, and nutritious meal that comes together with just 10 minutes of prep. The sweet potato breaks down to create a naturally creamy texture, while the turkey and beans make it filling and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey (93/7)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 3 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (15 oz) fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with juices
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for serving)
  • Diced avocado (for serving)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)
  • Greek yogurt or sour cream (for serving)
  • Shredded cheese (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Brown the turkey: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up, until browned and no longer pink (6-8 minutes). Add diced onion and minced garlic in the last 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Transfer the turkey mixture to a 6-quart slow cooker using a slotted spoon.
  3. Add cubed sweet potatoes, diced red bell pepper, drained black beans, and drained kidney beans to the slow cooker. Stir to distribute.
  4. Pour in fire-roasted diced tomatoes (with juices), tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Stir gently.
  5. In a small bowl, combine chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, cayenne (if using), salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle over the chili and stir thoroughly.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  7. About 30 minutes before serving, taste and adjust seasoning. Add more salt, cayenne, or lime juice as needed.
  8. Serve hot with desired garnishes: Greek yogurt, avocado, cilantro, lime wedges, and shredded cheese.

Notes

Don’t skip browning the turkey for best flavor. Cut sweet potatoes uniformly (1/2-inch cubes) for even cooking. Use a 6-quart slow cooker to avoid overcrowding. For a thicker chili, leave the lid off for the last 30 minutes. Leftovers taste even better the next day.
