This Easy Spooky Guacamole with Tortilla Chip Bats is a quick, fun, and delicious Halloween appetizer that comes together in under 10 minutes. Creamy guacamole with fresh lime and a hint of heat, topped with bat-shaped tortilla chips for a playful presentation that kids and adults love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large ripe avocados
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste)
  • 1 medium tomato, seeded and diced (optional)
  • 1 large bag sturdy tortilla chips (e.g., Tostitos Scoops)
  • Optional garnishes: smoked paprika, whole cilantro leaves, edible googly eyes

Instructions

  1. Cut the tortilla chip bats first: Take about 10-12 sturdy tortilla chips and use kitchen shears to cut them into bat shapes. Start by cutting a small notch at the top of each chip to create the bat’s ears, then angle the shears to create the wings. Set aside on a plate.
  2. Prepare the avocados: Cut the avocados in half lengthwise, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl. Discard the peels. Save one pit to tuck into the guacamole later to help prevent browning.
  3. Mash to your preferred texture: Use a fork to mash the avocado until mostly smooth but still with some small chunks.
  4. Add the lime juice: Squeeze the fresh lime juice over the mashed avocado and stir to combine.
  5. Mix in the aromatics: Add the diced red onion, chopped cilantro, minced jalapeño, and salt. Stir until evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  6. Fold in the tomato: If using, gently fold in the diced tomato. Be careful not to overmix.
  7. Transfer to serving bowl: Spoon the guacamole into a serving bowl and smooth the top. Press the saved pit into the center to help prevent browning.
  8. Arrange the bat chips: Gently press the tortilla chip bats into the guacamole at various angles, wings pointing up, so they look like they’re flying out of the bowl. Add a few regular chips around the edges for dipping.
  9. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle smoked paprika or extra cilantro on top. Serve immediately with extra chips on the side.

Notes

For best results, use room-temperature avocados and cold lime juice. Don’t over-mash—leave some texture. Cut the tortilla chip bats before mashing the avocados to keep hands clean. If making ahead, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. The bat chips will soften over time, so store them separately and add fresh ones when serving leftovers.
