Easy Spiced Hot Chocolate: Best Crockpot Recipe

crockpot spiced hot chocolate - featured image

A thick, dark, and impossibly smooth spiced hot chocolate made in a slow cooker. This recipe uses a blend of cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger for a rich, comforting drink that requires minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed recommended)
  • 4 cups whole milk (divided)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • Whipped cream and marshmallows for serving

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder with 1/4 cup of the milk to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
  2. Pour the remaining milk into a 4-quart slow cooker.
  3. Add the chocolate chips, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, ginger, salt, and chili powder to the slow cooker.
  4. Stir gently to combine the ingredients.
  5. Cover and set the slow cooker to Low. Cook for 2 to 3 hours, stirring every hour if possible.
  6. After 2 hours, stir the mixture well to ensure the chocolate is melted and the texture is glossy. If chunks remain, cook for another 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the cinnamon stick.
  8. Stir in the half-and-half until fully incorporated.
  9. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream and marshmallows if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Bloom the cocoa powder in a small amount of milk first to prevent lumps. If your slow cooker runs hot, use the ‘Warm’ setting to prevent scorching. For a dairy-free option, substitute milk with oat or almond milk, though the texture may be thinner. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat on the stovetop.
