This easy pumpkin dump cake is a simple, 4-ingredient fall dessert that tastes like autumn without the fuss. With a crispy, buttery top and a soft, custard-like bottom, it’s perfect for weeknights, Thanksgiving, or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) spice cake mix
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3/4 cup salted butter, sliced into thin pats
  • Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
  • Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling
  • Optional: a pinch of flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Spread the pumpkin puree evenly in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the entire box of spice cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer. Do not stir.
  4. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the dry cake mix.
  5. Layer the butter slices evenly over the top, covering the entire surface.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly. The center should still have a slight jiggle.
  7. Let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Use cold butter sliced into thin pats for the best crackly top. Do not use pumpkin pie filling. Let the cake rest before serving to allow the bottom layer to set. The cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and reheats well.
