This bright, spicy, and sweet homemade cranberry sauce features fresh ginger and orange, coming together in under 20 minutes. It’s the perfect make-ahead condiment for holiday feasts or everyday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon (6 grams) fresh orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon (about 15 grams) fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients: rinse cranberries, zest and juice the orange, grate the ginger, and measure sugar and water.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, and salt. Stir.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer.
  4. Stir in the orange zest and grated ginger.
  5. Simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most cranberries have burst and the sauce thickens.
  6. If desired, mash some berries with the back of a spoon for a smoother texture.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed (add more sugar or a squeeze of lemon).
  8. Remove from heat; the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  9. Cool completely, then transfer to a clean jar or airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

Use a pot slightly larger than needed to prevent boil-overs. Add ginger after the mixture simmers to preserve its bright flavor. The sauce thickens as it cools. For a smoother sauce, strain through a fine-mesh strainer. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
