Crispy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket - featured image

A quick and easy Halloween appetizer featuring mini sausages wrapped in flaky crescent roll or puff pastry dough, decorated with poppy seeds to look like mummies. Perfect for parties and ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Mini pork sausages (or regular sausages cut into thirds)
  • Refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry strips
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (for eyes)
  • Melted butter (optional, for brushing)
  • Dijon mustard or yellow mustard (optional, for flavor)
  • Dried thyme or rosemary (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). If using puff pastry, preheat to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Pat sausages dry with a paper towel. If using regular sausages, cut them in half or thirds.
  3. Unroll crescent roll dough or puff pastry and tear/cut into strips about 1 inch wide. Keep dough cold.
  4. Wrap a strip of dough around each sausage, leaving a small gap at the top for the face. Leave ends sticking out slightly.
  5. Place two poppy seeds or sesame seeds on the top part of the sausage for eyes. Use a tiny dot of water or egg wash to help them stick if needed.
  6. Lightly brush the dough strips with the egg wash mixture.
  7. Place mummies on parchment-lined baking sheets, leaving space between them.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  9. Cool for 2-3 minutes on the pan, then transfer to a cooling rack or serving platter. Serve warm.

Notes

Keep the dough cold to ensure flakiness and prevent tearing. Do not wrap the dough too tightly around the sausage to allow for expansion. If using puff pastry, ensure it is fully thawed. For a vegan version, use vegan sausages and dough, and substitute the egg wash with plant milk.
