A rich, velvety sweet potato casserole infused with real maple syrup and bourbon, topped with a crunchy pecan crumble. This forgiving and flavorful side dish is perfect for holidays and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds large sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon whiskey
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons cold butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash sweet potatoes, poke with a fork, and roast for 45-60 minutes until soft. Let cool.
  2. Cut potatoes in half, scoop flesh into a large bowl, and mash until mostly smooth.
  3. Add softened butter, maple syrup, bourbon, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the mashed potatoes. Mix until combined and taste for balance.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, and pecans. Cut in cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Roasting sweet potatoes instead of boiling concentrates flavor. Toast pecans for extra crunch. If the topping browns too quickly, cover with foil. Bourbon can be substituted with extra maple syrup or apple cider for a non-alcoholic version.
