A warm, comforting winter drink made with simple ingredients like brown sugar, butter, and dark rum, infused with cinnamon and nutmeg for a cozy, soothing experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 4 ounces water
  • 1.5 ounces dark rum
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2–3 whole cloves
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Optional: small strip of lemon peel

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Heat over medium-low heat until simmering (do not boil) and steep for 5 minutes.
  2. Add brown sugar to the spiced water and stir gently until completely dissolved.
  3. Remove saucepan from heat. Add unsalted butter and whisk vigorously until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and slightly frothy.
  4. Pour the spiced butter syrup into a mug. Add dark rum and stir to combine. Strain if desired to remove whole spices.
  5. Grate fresh nutmeg over the top. Add lemon peel if using. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not boil the water when adding butter to prevent separation. Use fresh spices for best flavor. The drink is best served immediately as the butter emulsion may separate upon cooling. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and replace with hot water or milk.
