This easy copycat Starbucks brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is fast, forgiving, and tastes just like the real thing—without the $6 price tag or the line of cars. It’s the perfect homemade coffee shop drink, ready in under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces) or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 3/4 cup cold oat milk (preferably Oatly Barista Edition or Chobani Extra Creamy)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice (generous handful, large cubes preferred)

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee. If using instant espresso powder, dissolve 2 teaspoons in 2 tablespoons of hot water.
  2. In an airtight jar or cocktail shaker, combine the hot espresso with 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Stir vigorously until the sugar is completely dissolved (about 30 seconds).
  3. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, then add a generous handful of ice cubes to the jar (fill about halfway).
  4. Screw the lid on tight and shake vigorously for exactly 15 seconds.
  5. Pour the shaken espresso mixture (including the ice from the shaker) into a serving glass. Add fresh ice if desired.
  6. Slowly pour 3/4 cup cold oat milk over the back of a spoon into the glass to create layers.
  7. Stir gently and serve immediately.

Notes

Dissolve the brown sugar in hot espresso first to avoid gritty texture. Shake for exactly 15 seconds for best foam. Use barista-edition oat milk for creamy texture and to prevent curdling. Serve immediately for best texture.
